Bike Anchorage Director

Hours: Part-Time Position (30 hours/week)

Compensation: $25-30 per hour depending on experience

Reports to: Board of Directors President 

Location: Anchorage, AK – provide your own office


Summary of Position: Bike Anchorage seeks a dynamic and highly motivated individual to advance our organization’s commitment to making Anchorage more bicycle friendly. The Director will be responsible for program management, communications, policy development, research, partnership building, fundraising, volunteer management, and administration.

The ideal candidate will have experience in most of the following areas: education, policy development, communications, transportation planning, local government, public health, advocacy, grassroots organizing, volunteer management, and social equity. This position has the potential for growth within the organization and would be a part of a supportive, passionate, and dynamic team.

Bike Anchorage is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. The position is for 12 months and contingent on funding availability. 

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Work closely with the Board of Directors to set priorities and carry out program goals;
  • Lead communications and information sharing, including writing newsletters, blog posts, website updates, social media, reports, and other public-facing outreach;
  • Teach bicycle safety education courses in Anchorage and in communities across the state;
  • Organize events and facilitate networking of Bike Anchorage members and supporters via webinars, calls, in-person meetings and other gatherings;
  • Actively engage with and support community members, advocates, and thought leaders interested in advancing Bike Anchorage’s priorities;
  • Manage, conduct and support research efforts around traffic safety, public advocacy and education, and related topics;
  • Contribute to effective systems to track organizational progress and evaluate program components, to measure success that can be effectively communicated;
  • Support fundraising efforts;
  • Serve as a public-facing representative of the organization at events;
  • Lead and support grant writing efforts for program funding;
  • Assist with administrative and IT tasks.
  • Additional responsibilities to be identified, as the program evolves.
  • Periodic travel to other Alaska communities is required. 


  • Must become a League Certified Instructor (LCI) through the League of American Bicyclists within the first 6 months of employment. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the fields of transportation, education, policy, and advocacy;
  • Proven history of engaging with and positively impacting diverse communities;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Strong time-management skills, with the ability to meet goals and deadlines while working independently;
  • Knowledge of and experience with building organizational networks for social impact;
  • Adept with social media and web-based outreach tools;
  • Grant-writing experience;
  • Commitment to organizing people to achieve change; and
  • Some driving and travel required. Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance required.

Physical demands: Activities will include providing and operating a bicycle, wearing required safety gear including lights, helmet, reflective clothes, etc.

Work environment: Bike Anchorage will not provide a dedicated office space. However, there is an opportunity to access a co-working space. There is a flexible schedule. 

Bike Anchorage is an at-will employer.
