Week Without Driving 2025

Could You Go A Week Without Driving?

For one week, we’re inviting Anchorage residents to put away their car keys and experience our city the way many of our neighbors already do: By walking, biking, rolling, riding the bus, or catching a ride.

If this sounds intimidating or hard... that's the idea! Our built environment makes it difficult and sometimes even impossible to live a full life without owning a car and driving everywhere. But think of how many people in our community are not drivers. Nationwide, about 1/3 of Americans don't drive for a wide variety of reasons. They might be too young to get a drivers' license, or aged out of driving, or have health concerns like epilepsy or nystagmus that preclude driving, but everyone needs to get around our city!

The Week Without Driving challenge will be from Monday, September 29 to Sunday, October 5, 2025.

How It Works

  • The Challenge: Try not to drive yourself anywhere for one week. That includes errands, commuting, and fun outings.

  • Other Options: You can still get around in other ways: Walk, roll, bike, ride the bus, or ask for rides. If you do need to drive, that’s okay! It's a chance to reflect on what that trip would have been like if driving weren’t an option.

  • Keep Notes: Pay attention to how long trips take, how easy it is to cross streets, how safe you feel biking or walking, how much a ride costs, and how it all adds up.

  • Share Your Story: We hope your experience will leave you energized to push for real change to make our streets safer and more accessible for everyone. We'll provide simple ways to turn your observations of unsafe intersections, transportation gaps, and other issues into advocacy opportunities.

PLUS: Mini Bike to Work Day!

We're making the Week Without Driving a little sweeter with a bonus Bike to Work Day on Friday, October 3! Enjoy treats from your favorite local organizations along popular bike routes in Anchorage. Treat stations will be open from 7:00-9:00 A.M.

Check out the treat station map here.
