Could You Go A Week Without Driving?
Week Without Driving is a national movement, and People Mover, Bike Anchorage and the Anchorage Health Department are bringing it to Anchorage.
Join us, alongside hundreds of communities nationwide, in trying life without driving for a trip, a day, or the whole week: choose anything besides a personal vehicle, like bus, bike, walk, scooter, or carpool.
See Anchorage from a different point of view, and discover how walkable, bikeable, and bus-able the city really is. Accept the challenge, go solo or team up, track your week, and share your experience.
The Week Without Driving challenge will be from October 1-8, 2026. And all week, People Mover rides are free and you can complete a bingo card to win prizes!
How It Works
-
The Challenge: Try not to drive yourself anywhere for one week. That includes errands, commuting, and fun outings.
-
Other Options: You can still get around in other ways: Walk, roll, bike, ride the bus, or ask for rides. If you do need to drive, that’s okay! It's a chance to reflect on what that trip would have been like if driving weren’t an option.
-
Keep Notes: Pay attention to how long trips take, how easy it is to cross streets, how safe you feel biking or walking, how much a ride costs, and how it all adds up.
-
Share Your Story: We hope your experience will leave you energized to push for real change to make our streets safer and more accessible for everyone. Turn your observations of unsafe intersections, transportation gaps, and other issues into advocacy opportunities.

"Changing Lanes" Documentary Screening: Wednesday, October 7
Get inspired with this great documentary about safe streets advocacy! Here's the synopsis:
When a beloved teacher is tragically killed in a hit-and-run crash in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, a grassroots movement emerges to transform a notoriously dangerous four-lane boulevard into a safer, two-lane street with protected bike lanes. While many applaud the proposed road diet, it also sparks a backlash — led in part by a powerful local business owner. As government support begins to waver, neighbors unite to challenge entrenched interests and fight for a safer Greenpoint.
Wednesday, October 7 at 6:00 P.M. at the Wilda Marston Theater at the Loussac Library. Doors open at 5:30. This event is free and open to the public.
Attend the Public Transit Advisory Board meeting: Thursday, October 8
After your Week Without Driving, you're going to have a lot of ideas to make our city better for biking, walking and transit. Share your observations at the PTAB meeting, in-person or online.
