I love what Bike Anchorage is working toward for the city of Anchorage-- safer streets to ride on and a more bike friendly environment.

Bike Anchorage has shown an immense level of support for Anchorage GRIT, my middle school girls cycling mentorship program. Cait Rodriguez and I are very proud of our six week program culminating in a three day 65 mile adventure ride from Anchorage to the end of Eklutna Lake. Last year, we worked with eighteen 7th grade girls. Before the program, none of the girls had ridden more than 10 miles. By the end of the Anchorage GRIT, they were riding trails with confidence and endurance. Bike Anchorage supports Anchorage GRIT by taking care of our insurance, fundraising and managing our finances. They also help us kick-off the program with a safe riding class for the students and parents. We are so grateful for all of their help and thoughtfulness. They keep our program safe and protected, eliminating much of the daunting administrative work.

I really appreciate the tremendous effort and energy Bike Anchorage puts into making cycling infrastructure better in Anchorage and supporting educational programs so I can continue doing what I love-- riding my bike and inspiring others to get out and ride theirs.

It's time for the 2nd annual Bike Art Show at the Trek Store of Anchorage! Bike Anchorage and the Trek Store are teaming up to kick off the 2019 Winter Bike Fest. We’re filling the walls of the Trek Store with art celebrating all things BIKE. This is a group show open to all mediums, so recruit an artist that you’d love to see the work of.

Safer Systems for All Road Users - sounds like a worthy goal doesn't it?

In August, Bike Anchorage applied on behalf of the city to participate in a training hosted by America Walks. We were excited to be selected as one of ten cities across the country to participate! We just wrapped up our third training session, and have enjoyed fruitful discussions with planners and engineers about ways to better design for all road users. 

Here's more on the training from America Walks:

"The training will help selected communities assess, plan, and prioritize effective and context-sensitive safety treatments to reduce the growing numbers of pedestrian fatalities and injuries. Following a year of implementation, America Walks and its partners will share the results of the technical assistance and provide an outline of lessons learned and cultivate inspiration for other cities looking to address pedestrian safety."

Thanks to Generous funding from REI, Bike Anchorage was able to work with Chugach State Park to install new fat bike signs, a fix-it station, bike rack, and trail map kiosk! The new signs help clarify which trails are open to fat bikes in the winter and help promote this activity across the park. We are so lucky to have a group of great volunteers who helped us get everything installed.

A silver-level Bicycle Friendly City (designated by the League of American Bicyclists), Anchorage is host to 248 miles of bikeable trails and bike lanes, with a network of 541 miles planned by 2028. Along with its nationally ranked system of trails, Anchorage is known as the home of fat-tire biking. If you’re riding on trails, be sure and watch out for moose!
